The Hungarian Democratic Forum was founded originally as a social movement in 1987, the organization gradually became the leading opposition force in Hungary. In the early period preceding 1990, it steadily formulated the frames for its operation. In the beginning, these were almost exclusively connected to the person of Sándor Lezsák, it is typical, that his private address was indicated as the postal address of the organization. As a result of its becoming a party and the formation of a government, a more extensive and organized structure was formed, which is reflected also in the documents. The majority of the documents of the party archives, which had operated since 1989, was saved from destruction and loss by Sándor Lezsák by transporting them to Lakitelek and storing them in the Bolyai House. The materials in Lakitelek were moved in 2019 to a building specifically designed for archival purposes, which is situated also on the grounds of the Lakitelek Népfőiskola.

The archival unit contains the documents related to the Hungarian Democratic Forum. These were preserved mostly through the personal collection of Sándor Lezsák in the early period until 1990, while the local documents of the Hungarian Democratic Forum were collected and added to the Archives by RETÖRKI.
